Woodstock Homes and Real Estate for Sale in McHenry County, Illinois

(View Woodstock, Illinois homes for sale)

Woodstock, Illinois: Woodstock , Illinois, located 51 miles NW of the Loop was originally called Centerville to attract the seat of McHenry County government in 1842. The Centerville site was chosen instead of Crystal Lake or McHenry when Alvin Judd donated a two- acre public square for county offices. The square became the hub of a village plat recorded in 1844 by George Dean. In 1845, Woodstock adopted its current name after the Vermont birthplace of early settler Joel Johnson. Woodstock incorporated as a village in 1852 with Alvin Judd as president. The Greek revival–style courthouse that stands next to the square was built in 1857; it is now privately owned. Woodstock is the kind of city that people fall in love with. A treasure nestled in the heart of McHenry County; it is history, with a future. Whether you come because of the schools, the culture, the countryside, the business opportunities, or just to be a part of its Victorian charm, Woodstock offers a million reasons to stay. Woodstock is a true Midwestern city where community and quality of life are values that are revealed in every street and sidewalk. Beginning in the center of its historic Square and moving out to its farm-cushioned edge, Woodstock is unique--a place that its citizens are proud to call home.
